When they approached us, Orbit’s existing intranet wasn’t fit for purpose. The functionality was overcomplicated, rarely used and difficult to access; the look and feel was poor and not designed around the needs of front-end users or back-end administrators; and it failed to perform simple but crucial tasks well.
Their existing platform also meant it was difficult (and expensive) to add and configure new or bespoke features. It had become a hindrance to the organisation and its staff, not a help.
Orbit wanted a fresh approach focusing on user-centric design and simple functionality aligned to their core business objectives, using an intranet platform that was responsive, easy to integrate with internal systems, and could be personalised for individual members of staff.
"Well done to the team for getting this new intranet up and running! The old site was past its best and we needed a fresh start."
Improved engagement, communication and efficiency for 1400 staff
Simple tasks, such as document sharing and staff directory, done brilliantly
Seamless integration with Yammer, Active Directory and other systems
We worked with Orbit to ascertain the key functionality required, including an integrated staff directory, document storage and sharing, prioritised news and announcements, and social integration.
Reflecting how modern users consume digital, we ensured the system focused on a simple user experience with minimal calls to action, and concentrated on performing these few, core tasks really well to create a seamless workflow and make life easier for staff.
Our design is based on a bespoke, personalised dashboard that that makes it extremely easy for staff to see and access the information and functionality most vital to their individual role and need, such as popular documents, their personal calendar, and key internal messages and announcements.
The dashboard is made up of fully configurable ‘content panels’ that also scale and stack for different screen sizes – great for the increasing number of Orbit staff who work remotely using tablets and mobiles.
